For as long as I can remember birthdays have always been one of the most important holidays to celebrate, next to Christmas and Thanksgiving. It didn’t matter whose birthday it was, celebration was necessary. I still feel that way, which is why getting older is so weird. When you’re a kid every birthday is an achievement. Each year signifying one step closer to adulthood, independence and responsibility. But after 25 the numbers themselves stop representing achievements in life and start becoming reminders of how long you have had to suffer with adulthood, independence and responsibility (insert sarcasm symbol here).
Although the idea of getting older is scary in many ways, trust me the last thing I want to think about right now is turning 30 (cringes), I have decided to embrace my age, wisdom and maturity one year at a time. Well, I am working on it.
Last year my amazing husband and our amazing friends got together and created a fantastic surprise for me for my birthday. While I was basking in the sun at Medicine Park, they work slaving away to create a patio and paint all my kitchen cabinets. The picture to the left is of Medicine Park, Oklahoma. Below you can see the cabinets and patio and me genuinely surprised. (read more here)
This year the month of June looked to be a crazy one. Vacation, weekend craft show, Father’s day, wedding shower, band gig, etc. I wanted to do something fun for my birthday, but couldn’t really see when or how with all that was going on. I had decided that rather than one big party, I may just see a couple friends at a time or something. So when my husband told me that our friend Tiffany wanted to take us out for dinner on my birthday for sushi I was excited and satisfied with that as my birthday option.
I came home from Enid, OK Sunday night after a long weekend of craft show and Father’s Day celebrating. Cooper, my husband, and I decided to go have a drink with a couple friends for a bit and ring in my birthday at midnight. (not the smartest plan on a Sunday night, but fun) Before we headed out he told me he had a present for me, but I had to wait till my birthday to get it. Then on the way home, after midnight and officially my birthday, I asked if I could open it then and he said “No. It’s like Christmas Eve. Just because it’s Midnight doesn’t make it officially Christmas.” Okay, fine, I’m a big girl I can wait.
I go to work on my birthday, just like any other Monday, but maybe a little brighter and definitely early due to a meeting. It was a really nice day. I got balloons from our Junior Volunteers. I was serenaded a couple times. I was taken out to lunch by my friend and colleague Azure. An all around good day. About three in the afternoon I decide that rather than work out after work I wanted a pre-dinner nap for my birthday. So, Azure, being my ride home, gets me out of work on time, barely, and takes me home. I nap then awake and get ready for a night out. Cooper tells me that my present is at Tiffany’s and that we are picking her up for dinner, so I can get it then. All dressed up we go to Tiffany’s. I can tell we plan on going in and being there for a minute before dinner so I grab my purse (this is normal).
When I walk in the door I can’t believe that I am being greeted by several of my dearest friends and a Star Wars Happy Birthday banner!
They got me again! I had no idea. I am told to look around and there are Star Wars plates, table clothes, stickers, a birthday button/ribbon for me to wear and 3D glasses. Yes, all the decorations are 3D. How awesome is that! Next I go on the back deck to discover that my Mom, Step-dad and little brother are all there too! They even brought Winston, the adorable puppy I fell in love with while visiting that weekend. On top of all that, they had card tables set up and planned a Texas Hold’em poker tournament. That may seem strange, but I love playing and never get to because the guys play on “guys night”. There was food, candy, homemade chocolate covered strawberries (my Mom is awesome); it was so freakin fun! I managed to stay in the tournament until it was just me and my friend Eric. He got me in the end, but man! It was a blast to play!
I had so much fun and the best gift is knowing how amazing my husband and friends are. I couldn’t ask for a better group of friends in my life then what I have right now. They embody everything I have always thought friendship should be. I am so blessed to be where I am in life, age and all, and surrounded by so many awesome and caring people. Thank you to everyone who helped surprise me yet again (how do you keep doing that?)! And thank you to everyone who couldn’t be there, but sent your love. I love you all and want you to know how thankful I am to have you in my life.
